A darkness lurks beneath (well,
beside) the crystal blue waves,
sunny beaches, shady palms, and even
shadier economics of Diver's Cove
in the Cayman islands.
It is a darkness that threatens
to consume everything good and
pure about this fabled land:
Web design class projects
Little did the people of Diver's
Cove know, but their glittering
idyll was about to be tarnished
and battered by a torrent of
really poor design choices.
Like, REALLY poor.
Enter our hero, Sally, Paragon
of Perfection.
The instructor of the Intro
to Web Design course in which
she was enrolled had given the class
an assignment that was a grave insult
to the people, places, things, and
other nouns of Diver's Cove:
Build a website for a fictional
Diver's Cove Hotel & Restaurant.
Sally, in an act of unparalleled
benevolence, chose to complete this
assignment, in hopes of sparing the
innocent denizens of Diver's Cove
from the eyeball-searing visual
cacophony that was about to
be unleashed upon them.
And also because it was a big
part of her grade and she cared
perhaps overmuch about the state of
her pristine GPA.
She would be the eye of the storm for
the Divers, a spot of marginal
attractiveness in the gale force
winds of questionable design.
Was it perfect?
Obviously not. This was the selfless
Sally's first website since the last
Harry Potter fansite she built in 2003,
so we're grading on a bit of a curve
here.
Was it better than the others?
The excedingly humble and heroic
Sally would never say so herself,
but yes, yes it was.
So in the end, Sally, Champion of
Diver's Cove, saved the day--and her
GPA--by turning in an assignment that
sucked a lot less than the aesthetic
abominations submitted by the others.
You're welcome, Diver's Cove.

Fire Notice
Look around now and choose the exit nearest to your seat. In the event of a fire, walk (do not run) to that exist. Do not try to beat your neighbor to the street.*

ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION The Diver's Cove Hotel & Restaurant site was a school project from the first web design class I ever took when I went back to school to get my programming degree. It was the first of two major projects from that class (the other being The Librarian's Toolbox). Everyone in the class had to build a single-page website for a fictional resort called "Diver's Cove Hotel & Restaurant" and it had to include the basics of any website (navigation, text, images, etc.), but other than a few snippets of ad copy we were provided, it was up to us to design the site, design and create a logo (I made mine in a free online logo generator, like a boss), and then build the site itself. Considering it was the first website I built since 2003, I'm pretty ok with it. It's colorful and pleasing to my eye, if as amateurish as one might expect from an Intro to Web Design student.

Sponsors

The following sponsors have been made possible by this production:**
*Fire notices like these were commonly used on theatrical playbills and programs in the early 20th century. This particular one appears in almost identical form on a number of different Ziegfeld Follies theatrical playbills and is attributed to whichever local fire commissioner happened to be wandering by at a given moment (ok the wandering bit may or may not be true). This may have become a standard warning after a fire at Chicago's Iroquois Theater in 1903 claimed over 600 lives.
